Alive! Calcium Soft Jells Supplements Review

I think I first started really considering my calcium intake when I was breastfeeding my daughter. You see, at 5 weeks she was diagnosed with cow’s milk allergy and I had to change my diet and go dairy free so that she didn’t react to my milk. Before then, I really had no idea what amount of calcium I should be having in my diet everyday. Adults need 700mg a day, according to the NHS website, or 1000mg if you’re breastfeeding. Also, worth noting you shouldn’t really have more than 1500mg per day normally as it can lead to an upset stomach.

If you don’t have dairy in your diet there plenty of other places you get calcium from; kale, spinach, mackerel, sardines and fortified grains and cereals are all good sources. What’s interesting also is 99% of the calcium in your body is stored in your teeth and bones. Did you know that if you don’t get enough calcium in your diet, that your body actually strips it from your teeth and bones? And that a lack of both calcium and vitamin D in your diet can also increased the risk of osteoporosis. Scary huh?

Perhaps an unknown fact too is that you actually need vitamin D in order to absorb calcium. Which is something the health visitor has advised me to ensure my daughter is getting plenty of as she has to eat a totally dairy free diet.

So, I was interested when Alive! contacted me to review their new calcium supplements. Rather than the usual giant vitamin tablets you get, they are soft, chewable, strawberry flavoured jells.

When I opened the bottle, they actually smell quite appetising. Which if I’m honest, I wasn’t expecting. So appetising and they look very much sweets that my son immediately asked – can I have one? As they are suitable for children over 3,  I let him try one too. He has therefore asked for one everyday since!

I wouldn’t say that the jells are exactly like sweets, they have I guess I would describe it as a slightly chalky taste to them. But they are certainly nice enough to eat and much nicer than trying to swallow a massive tablet.

They contain (you have two jells per day) 500mg of calcium and 25ug of Vitamin D (500% of your recommended daily amount). They contain a dried blend of fruit and vegetables and are suitable for vegetarians and free from gluten, soya, yeast, dairy, artificial flavours, colours and preservatives. So it’s a really easy way of making sure you get enough calcium and vitamin D everyday in a pretty tasty way. It’s also an easy way to get your children to get extra vitamins into their diet too.

You can buy Alive! calcium soft jells on feelaliveuk.com at £14.99 for 60 tablets.

  1. Ooh it’s great that these are veggie. I haven’t been eating much dairy lately, I went off milk when I was pregnant and I’m going off other dairy products too now so calcium is important. I might have to get some.
