Why You Need a statement Jacket this Autumn Winter

Autumn is well and truly upon us, with leaves all different shades of brown, gold and red, and winter is very much in the air. The days of maxi dresses and flip flops have passed and it’s time for chunky books, layers and cosy knits. This autumn winter, I am loving a statement jacket. It makes such an impact on your outfit and really switches it up. Take a pair of jeans, a pair of palazzo trousers or a simple dress and add a statement jacket and all of a sudden your outfit has a different look and feel to it.

The autumn-winter brings with it unpredictable weather and if you’re like me sometimes I have absolutely no clue what to wear! Will I wear a jumper and then be too hot all day, or a jersey top or dress and spend the day freezing? Which is why I am a big fan of layers.

The jacket or blazer is such a versatile wardrobe item. I love a bold print, but also have a pink blazer which can bring a real pop of colour when you need it. This cotton quilted jacket I am wearing here from Cotton Traders, is in fab neutral colours which means I can add colour to my outfit with bold accessories and or a bright top underneath. It was also look amazing with a jersey dress, paired with denim dungarees or as I am wearing it here with jeans.

My essential wardrobe pieces for layers are:

  • Tops and T-shirts
  • Roll neck jumpers
  • Shirts
  • Chunky knits
  • Scarves or shawls for a touch of texture and warmth

But to add pizzaz to your outfit you also need accessories. Firstly I need earrings, there’s always earrings and I do like a bold lipstick too. Here are some of my go-to accessories:

  • Boots: ankle, knee-high, or chunky platforms
  • Bags: crossbody for casual outings or structured totes for sophistication
  • Hats: fedoras, berets, or beanies
  • Statement jewellery, bold necklaces and fun earrings

Jeans are a statement wardrobe piece, everyone needs a comfortable, well-fitting pair of jeans in their outfit. Skinny jeans are on their way out (sorry guys). I actually don’t miss them as I wasn’t the biggest fan. I am loving wide-leg styles so much, and nipping back to my teen life of the 90s. I am wearing wide-leg stone wash jeans here from the Alex Jones collection at Cotton Traders. Paired with this pink long-sleeve jersey top, also from Cotton Traders. And a great-fitting pair of jeans can be worn with so many things.

I do find autumn and winter trickier for dressing than I do spring summer, and I particularly hate the frizzy hair that comes with wet weather. But I am convinced a statement jacket is the way to go. This one is really fun, I also have a pink blazer also from Cotton Traders that has become a total favourite. Another way to layer up for autumn is with chunky knits which also go great under a statement jacket. What’s your favourite way to layer up for the cooler months?
