My Summer 2019 Style

My Summer 2019 Style

I never used to give a monkeys what I wore when I was younger.  Honestly, I didn’t feel like I had a great deal to work with so jeans and T shirts it was.  It might be I’ve got better looking as I got older, or it might be that I’m more comfortable within myself, but these days I do like nice things to wear. What I tend to have is a particular piece that I like to focus on, it’s a bit like new toy syndrome really. I’ll build my style around that for a little while.

I’m super stoked because that new piece this summer is a rather gorgeous pair of Ray-ban Aviators.  I’ve had some Wayfarers for a little while now and they’re great glasses, the optics are superb and they look ok but, I’ll be honest, I have never felt the same about them since Robert Downey Jr started wearing them in the Avengers movie.  I was very excited when I got to try a pair of gold rimmed red Aviators from SmartBuyGlasses.  There were a number of potential choices here from their designer range but as soon as I saw the Aviators I knew they had to be mine.

What I like about them is the versatility.  I’ve lost some weight in the last year so I’m loving skinny jeans right now, the Aviators go perfectly with blue jeans, a vibrant shirt and smart boots to create a sharp but comfortable summer party look, the red lenses soften the look a bit where black or mirrored lenses would be too harsh.

You can dial it down a notch further by keeping the jeans but adding in a T Shirt and a biker style jacket.  I’m not lying when I said I’ve wanted this look since a certain slightly bonkers actor threw a leg over a GPZ900 in 1986.  I may not look like him but it makes me feel like I’m just about to fly jets with Val Kilmer and that’s what matters (see also flares making me think I’m Ian Gillian circa 1968)

If you really want to go for maximum chill factor, the beauty of a style like the aviator is that it works with baggy beach shorts and a vest for a seaside chill-out ensemble.  Much like the Fender Stratocaster and the Rolex Oyster, Ray-ban got the Aviator completely right first time, so there’s been no need to make anything other than minor changes along the way.

So there you go, my summer look for 2019 is based around some deliciously retro Ray-bans. It is also worth stating that I was told by the editor, in no uncertain terms, that it was not permissible to purchase a pair of snakeskin loafers, a wide brimmed hat and a shirt with lapels you can surf down just ‘to take some silly pictures’, but I did try.  Now, if anybody wants me, I’ll be in the 1970s, solving some crime.
