My Favourite Five Books: My Favourite Five Children’s Books Chosen by an 8 Year Old {Thimble and Twig}

My Favourite Five Books

Today I would like to welcome to the blog Jemma from Thimble and Twig.  She is guesting in my series where different people share their five favourite books in a chosen genre. Jemma has shared today five books chosen by her 8 year old daughter Elodie. She also did all of the photos for this feature which I think are just lovely. These all look like books I would have adored myself as a girl too.

Elodie Thimble and Tiggs

I feel lucky that my daughter, Elodie who is eight, loves to read because it was my favourite thing to do when I was little (it would also be my favourite thing now but I find reading tricky to squeeze into my day!). Elodie can often be found snuggled up in her teepee reading under blankets or cosied up in her bed surrounded by fairy lights and books!

1. Witch Wars by Sibéal Pounder

Witch Wars

This is the first in a series (currently 4 books) about a nine year old girl named Tiga Whicabim. She lives with her guardian, mean and nasty Miss Heks. She spends most of her time in the shed to get away from her. Elodie loves it because it has glamour, witchcraft, friendship and the most exquisite illustrations – what more could you ask for? I read a snippet and it’s deliciously funny and bizarre, with absolutely fantastic drawings. I can see why she likes it, it’s a real charmer of a book!

2. Ballet Shoes by Noel Streatfield

I was over the moon when Elodie picked this book because this was also one of my favourites as a little girl. Elodie is obsessed with all things ballet and dancing and dreams of a life on the stage so this is an obvious favourite but I also like it because it’s a classic children’s story, charming and full of positive messages about responsibility and commitment to others with strong female characters who are beautifully described.

3. Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling

Harry Potter

An obvious choice possibly, I’m sure it must feature on the list of books you must read in your lifetime! Elodie has only read 1-3 of Harry Potter because they get more tricky and slightly more scary as they go on. But I think they’re so appealing because they have plenty of magic and adventure alongside a backdrop of friendship stories and a boy’s hope to escape the mundane. I mean, who wouldn’t want a friend like Harry?!

4. The Tail of Email Windsnap by Liz Kessler

The Tale of Emily Windsnap

The Tail of Emily Windsnap is an enchanting story about a girl, Emily, who is part mermaid. She does not realise that she is different until she takes a swim class when she’s 12. Elodie loves it because there’s a lot about friendship with some important life lessons too! It’s mysterious, wonderful and magical!

5. The Magic Princess Dress by Gwyneth Rees

The Magic Princess Dress

Another of Elodie’s passions is sewing and so this book ticks all the boxes as you are invited to step inside Marietta’s Magic Dress Shop where there are hundreds of beautiful dresses in every colour of the rainbow-sewn with magic thread. The dresses whisk Marietta onto a magical adventure to Fairytale land. It’s a book with a lot of pink and sparkles and magic!
