If you’re like me you probably don’t give a lot of consideration into the type of glass you use in different design elements in your home. I want them to be safe and to look good. But there is a lot more to glass than meets the eye.
You have glass in some many different elements of your home – in your windows and doors, shower screens, table tops, shelves and kitchen splashback. It’s not only important that they look good, it’s also a good idea to make sure that they’re safe too.
Just over 3% off accidents in the home per year are caused by glass accidents with windows and doors, so it’s so important you get the right glass for the project. For example, did you know that toughened glass is 5 times stronger than normal glass and should be used in the home to help keep you and your family safe?
The Different Types of Glass
There are lots of different types of glass (more than I realised). Here are some of the most common types that you find in homes:
Float Glass (Standard Glass)
Basic, clear glass often used for picture frames or interior cabinet doors. It’s not as strong as other options and generally isn’t recommended for areas where safety is a concern.
Toughened (Tempered) Glass
Up to five times stronger than standard glass, toughened glass is designed to break into small, blunt pieces instead of sharp shards, reducing the risk of injury. It’s perfect for doors, shower screens, balustrades, and tabletops.
Laminated Glass
Created by bonding two or more layers of glass with a plastic interlayer, laminated glass holds together even when shattered. It’s commonly used in shopfronts, skylights, and areas requiring extra security or soundproofing.
Frosted or Obscure Glass
Ideal for bathrooms and areas where privacy is needed, frosted glass diffuses light beautifully while preventing clear views.
Tinted or Coated Glass
Tinted glass helps reduce glare and heat from sunlight, making it great for conservatories and large windows. Low-emissivity (Low-E) coatings can also improve thermal efficiency.
Why It’s Important You Use an Expert
In order to get the right look, finish and safety it’s important you use an expert provider like Glass Warehouse. They will make sure you have the right glass for the location. But also help you to create the look you want. Glass can totally transform a place making it lighter and brighter. But also more energy efficient. Double glazing for example can help reduce you heating bills when the cold weather sets in.
If you have younger children like me, messy finger prints might be something you want to consider. Or little noses if you have a dog that likes to look at what is going on outside. I spend my life cleaning the glass in our patio doors! This is when an expert can advise you the right type of glass to make your home safer, more stylish, energy efficient and easier to maintain.
