Moving house is a big deal, and you’ll want to get each part of the process just right. There’s a lot to take care of, and getting help from the right services and resources will help to make the whole move run as smoothly and easily as possible.

Getting the right removals company involved is perhaps the most important piece of that puzzle. These are the three main questions you should ask before confirming your choice – keep them in mind throughout your search!

1. Are you registered and insured?

One of the first questions you’ll want to ask is whether the company is registered with the British Association of Removers (the BAR). This is the organisation that ensures their members work to a sufficiently high standard, offering a free ombudsmen service. If you have any issues with their service, as long as they’re registered with the BAR, you’ll have an official way of navigating that issue.

It’s also important to check that they’re insured. Most removals companies such as Bright Removers will offer some level of insurance, but if you’re moving particularly valuable items, it might also be worth arranging for your own, additional insurance premium.

2. Where are your reviews?

Next, you’ll want to see how other people have experienced the quality of service they provide. While BAR membership should ensure a certain degree of professionalism, reading through some of their reviews will provide an even more accurate insight into how they operate.

Look for specific insights into aspects of the service you’re concerned about, including issues such as customer service, punctuality, and price. If you see any concerning recurring themes that show up among the comments and reviews, it might be worth looking for another service, or at least bringing up those issues when you give them a call.

3. Is your pricing transparent?

Lastly, you’ll want to ask them about their pricing structure. When you get your initial quote, you’ll likely want to know whether that quote is subject to change, or if it will stay the same. Different companies will have different approaches to how they operate their pricing system, and that’s ok – what matters is that they’re consistent and transparent with that process.

As long as your requirements – how much you need to have moved, the locations of your old and new properties – remain the same, the price should also remain the same. Unexpected changes in this area should be flagged in their reviews if it’s an ongoing issue, but it’s still worth asking them before saying yes.

The main reason why anyone would hire a removals company is to make their lives and the move easier, not harder. By asking these basic questions about the services you’re considering using, you can ensure that they’re professional, affordable, and provide a high level of customer service. It might seem like a bit of a faff, but conducting your due diligence sooner rather than later can help to avoid issues further down the line, ultimately saving you effort in the long run.
