Face mask use and FAQs during COVID-19

In the midst of the global COVID-19 pandemic, we all have questions surrounding the effective use of face masks.

We’ve answered a few of the most frequently asked questions below.

Why wear a face mask?

Wearing a face mask is to protect others as much as it is to protect yourself.

They’re designed to stop the transmission of droplets from person to person when the wearer coughs, speaks or sneezes.

If you’re asymptomatic and infected with the virus, you may be unaware so wearing a mask during this time is recommended by health professionals to help curb the spread of COVID-19.

Can I wear a bandana, headband or neck warmer instead of a face mask?

The bottom line is that any form of face mask or face covering will offer more protection against the spread of COVID-19 than nothing at all.

This means you’re able to use fitted reusable bandanas, headbands or neck warmers as an alternative.  The key here is that your face covering features three layers of fabric and is fitted to your face, covering your nose and mouth.

Consider ordering any of the moisture wicking, lightweight and breathable Hoorag tubular bandanas directly online.

Do face masks stop the spread of COVID-19?

As long as they’re worn properly, face masks have shown to be effective in at least slowing the spread of COVID-19.

They’re yet another tool that we can use in our arsenal to limit the spread of the virus and try to keep those most vulnerable in our community safe.

When combined with social distancing and increased personal hygiene, face masks will add that extra barrier against droplets being transferred after coughing, sneezing or just speaking.

How do I safely put on and take off a face mask?

How to safely put on a face mask:

  1. Make sure you’ve washed your hands or sanitized them before putting your face mask on.
  2. Hold the mask by its loops or ends and tie it around your ears/head.
  3. Ensure the mask fits snugly against your face without touching.

How to safely take off a face mask:

  1. Again, make sure your hands are washed or sanitized.
  2. Untie the mask, touching only the loops or ends.
  3. Dispose of the mask or place in a sealed bag to be washed.
  4. Wash or sanitize your hands.

Throughout the entire process, try to always avoid touching the mask fabric itself, your eyes, nose or mouth.

How do I wash my reusable cloth face mask?

You should wash your reusable cloth face mask after every use.  To avoid re-using throughout the day, it may be worth packing multiple masks just in case.

Choosing to reuse your mask after you’ve taken it off already is risky because it may have been contaminated throughout the day, or as you’ve touched the fabric in taking it off.

Masks can be hand washed or washed with other clothes in your washing machine.  But always ensure you always use hot water and preferably dry your masks in direct sunlight to help kill germs and bacteria.
