We love books in our house. Books are wonderous things full of beautiful illustrations, fabulous stories and amazing new worlds. They are also a great way of teaching children without them even realising that they are learning.
With a baby, it can sometimes be hard to work out what is the right time to introduce them to books. My advice would be, as soon as you can, even when they are in the newborn stage you can get pram books for them to look at while they are lying down.
Tales from Nature: Bee and Ladybird
We have been sent two books from Tales from Nature: Bee and Ladybird. They are both lovely and colourful board books full of lots of bold illustrations. There are cut outs that layer across the pages adding a three-dimensional feel to the book. I particularly like how the pages inter-lay and some are in different shapes too making it really tactile for babies.
Bee tells us all about the role of bees – how they use their tongue to get nectar, how a beehive works and how the Queen lays eggs and how bees make honey. It’s told in very simple and child friendly terms.
Ladybird is in a similar vein and explains what ladybirds do and I have to admit to a bit of a confession here, as I didn’t actually know until I read this book myself! It shows how ladybirds camouflage from birds and how it hatches its eggs.
These are both really fab books that teaches children about the natural world. It’s great for young children and babies with the colourful, bold and engaging pages.
Shapes and Colours Bath Books
I think there is something very tactile about bath books, and another way to really get your child to engage with reading is to give them one they can play with in the bath. The bath has always been a favourite place for all of my children, so books and a bath can only be even better. Both these books and waterproof and padded, very simple in their design but still really interesting for baby.
The Shapes book has people on it in the shape of, well, shapes. With a shape to each page. Similarly, Colours has a fun, smiley items in different colours from lollipops to cherries. Both are funny and great in their simplicity.
Counts 123 and First Words by Jane Ormes
I remember my daughter had a First Words book, she loved it so much she actually destroyed it. So it’s great to have a new one for Bo to read. The style of the book is very similar to that of the Tales of Nature books I have reviewed above. We lots of fun illustrations and cut outs on the pages that show pictures on other pages. It covers all of the simple first words from car, trees, cat and apple. I really love the style of illustrations.
Count 123, is as you would expect a book about counting. Once again though it’s the illustrations that steal the show. They really are beautiful in style, elegant, yet colourful and as with the First Words book also has some cut outs on the pages, with pictures from other pages peeping through.
Both of these are really lovely books that would make a great gift for a baby.

I’m reviewing baby books this month too. I was so thrilled when my niece said she wanted books for her new baby at her babyshower. (I also made her baby blanket.) It’s never too early to introduce books to children, even if they only eat them at first 🙂
